Inspiration
To help with our school-wide initiative to improve literacy, the gladiator word of the day
What it does
It provides a standard dictionary that gives you the definition and pronunciation of words, but also adds an aspect of friendly competition with our implementation of a taboo-like game.
How we built it
We used MIT App Inventor to display the words and game, and the information needed for the app is queried from a server connected to a our word database.
Challenges we ran into
We needed to be able to access the database we had with all the words that were to be displayed and used in the taboo game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to query words from our database through the back-end server using the web component in MIT app inventor.
What we learned
We gained more in-depth experience with MIT app inventor, particularly with using the web component to query a server with HTTP GET commands, and that creating an app does not come without trial and error.
What's next for Lexicon
We plan to add pictures to the dictionary and game to help the students the word that they are learning, especially in the case of our English language learner students.
