Inspiration
Children with dyslexia often struggle with traditional learning methods. I wanted to create a gamified platform that makes learning more accessible, engaging, and confidence-building. The idea was inspired by accessibility-first design principles and the need for inclusive educational tools.
What it does
Lexia is a gamified learning platform built in Godot Engine. It uses accessibility-first mechanics—such as clear typography, adaptive difficulty, and visual/audio cues—to help children with dyslexia practice reading and comprehension in a fun, interactive way.
How we built it
- Engine: Godot (2D game framework)
- Accessibility-first design: Dyslexia-friendly fonts, color contrast, and adaptive feedback
- Gameplay: Mini-games focused on word recognition, spelling, and comprehension
- Repository: GitHub Project
Challenges we ran into
- Designing mechanics that are genuinely helpful without overwhelming learners
- Balancing fun gameplay with educational value
- Ensuring accessibility features worked consistently across devices
- Time constraints in building and testing multiple prototypes
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working prototype that demonstrates accessibility-first learning mechanics
- Created a gamified experience that children can enjoy while improving reading skills
- Learned how to integrate accessibility principles into game design
- Published open-source code for others to build upon
What we learned
- The importance of accessibility in educational software
- How to use Godot Engine effectively for rapid prototyping
- Balancing UX depth with simplicity for young learners
- The value of community feedback in refining ideas
What's next for Lexia - Dyslexia Gamification
- Expand mini-games to cover more reading and comprehension exercises
- Add adaptive learning paths based on player progress
- Collaborate with educators and accessibility experts for validation
- Deploy a web for broader reach
