Inspiration## Inspiration

International-law research can be difficult because relevant information is distributed across lengthy treaties, court judgments, and institutional repositories. Finding an answer is only part of the challenge; researchers also need to understand which legal authority supports that answer.

We were inspired to build a research tool that makes international-law research more accessible while keeping the underlying evidence visible and traceable.

What We Built

LEXGLOBAL is an AI-powered international-law research assistant focused initially on maritime and boundary law. Users can ask questions in natural language and receive a source-grounded explanation connected to treaties, legal provisions, and international judicial decisions.

Our core feature is the Legal Source Chain, which connects:

Question → Legal Issue → Legal Instrument → Legal Provision → Related Case → Official Source

This allows users to move from an AI-generated explanation back to the underlying legal material.

How It Works

LEXGLOBAL uses a retrieval-augmented research workflow:

User Question → Query Analysis → Legal Knowledge Retrieval → Relevant Evidence → AI Synthesis → Citation Validation → Legal Source Chain → Grounded Answer

The system is designed to prioritize available legal evidence and clearly indicate when the knowledge base does not contain sufficient support.

What We Learned

We learned that building a useful legal AI system requires more than generating text. Retrieval quality, source provenance, citation validation, clear uncertainty, and user experience are all essential.

We also learned to separate AI-generated explanations from the underlying legal source material so users can inspect and verify the evidence.

Responsible AI

LEXGLOBAL does not present itself as a lawyer, court, or legal decision-maker. It does not predict court outcomes or determine which state is legally correct.

When the available knowledge base does not contain sufficient evidence, the system can return an Insufficient Evidence result rather than inventing legal authorities.

Challenges

One of our main challenges was building a useful international-law research workflow while keeping the system grounded in a limited knowledge base.

Another challenge was making complex legal information understandable without removing important legal references and qualifications.

What's Next

Future development could expand the legal knowledge base, add broader areas of international law, improve retrieval using larger collections of authoritative documents, and support additional languages and document types.

LEXGLOBAL is an AI-powered legal research tool and is not a substitute for qualified legal advice.
