Fast Fitness Lens

Gamified fitness for Snapchat's young demographic? Endorphins, confidence, and better health in one package!? THREE games in ONE lens...?

  1. Flappy Bird but literally flapping your arms! (Upper body workout) 💪
  2. Virtual Soccer Goalie game, using your real body! (Cardio workout) 🏃
  3. A bodyweight endurance challenge, climbing a virtual mountain! (Lower body workout) 🏋️‍♀️
  • A twist on the addictive game Flappy Bird, but instead of killing time, you are pumping up your arms. It also looks amusing, since the bird is literally your face. Starts easy for beginners, but progressively gets harder for a real challenge. You won't notice until you're fatigued. 🐦

  • Play as a cyber soccer goalie anywhere without any equipment! Soccer (or football) is the most popular game in the world. A simple and intuitive way to get a full body workout in a 1 minute round, accessible for anyone with a smartphone. ⚽

  • Squat, Lunge, and Leg Lift to gain points and level up your score. Test your endurance every day and track your strength progression. This app works as a coach by tracking your body and using Text to Speech to count your reps for you. ⛰️

Why?

Every year, there are countless amazing new TV shows and video games. More and more reasons to sit on the couch and only move your thumbs. Meanwhile, sports do not change much from year to year. With augmented reality, we can bring the engagement of digital entertainment to the physical world.

Regular exercise fights bad mood and improves immunity... which boosts physical and mental health. In the US, over half of adults do not get enough aerobic exercise, and over 75% of adults do not meet strength and aerobic activity guidelines. This is a huge problem that impacts most people, and I want to empower people to improve their health. ❤️

Playing games to work out is fun, but it can be hard to coordinate with friends, find the proper space, and the proper equipment. Nearly everyone has a smartphone though, and by putting out a free lens, I can give instant access to an exercise method for the hundreds of millions of daily Snapchat users. If I can encourage just a few people to work out for a couple of minutes a day, all of the hard work I put into building this experience would be worth it. I hope that I can reach a lot of people, and encourage them to form healthy habits while having fun. I also hope other people are inspired to build similar experiences on this platform!

Challenges?

This type of thing is tricky in terms of UI/UX, and is also very costly in terms of performance. Bugs can also be extremely frustrating for users. People are expecting facial filters, and many are unaware of how tracking works, so users have to get eased into the experience quickly and intuitively.

To achieve this I designed around automated hints, and simplified features to fit on a phone screen. I chose to wrap three experiences in one to attract different audiences looking for different things, while also being a one stop shop for fun fitness games. Someone might be initially drawn in by one experience from a friend, play for a couple of minutes until their arms/legs are sore, then switch to another while they recover.

I wanted things to start out easy, but have a high skill ceiling for people who are athletic/advanced. Initially I planned more functionality, but pivoted to spending more time on doing a few things well. I had a lot of fun playtesting it, I hope other people have fun as well, and I'm looking forward to challenging my friends 😊

Roadmap / Monetization

I had many other ideas for experiences in this category of fitness games. With over 100 million Wii consoles sold, and the top grossing VR game being beat-saber, there is a huge market for these types of games.

First of all, I know brands would love to align themselves with something that is fun and improves health. These three experiences have a short and intense game style with pauses for breaks in between; a perfect opportunity for a sponsorship message while players are catching their breath.

Additionally, soccer (or football) has a huge global audience. As pose inference technology improves, and mobile chipsets get faster speeds, other "cyber sports" can be unlocked, and companies can market to passionate audiences by sponsoring the creation of a virtual sport experience.

Finally, I just scratched the surface of what is possible in Lens Studio. There are connected features that I want to implement that would take these AR experiences to the next level, adding seamless social functionality enabling higher growth and retention for users.

Here are features I will be updating the lens with, they are in progress but can't make the hackathon deadline

  1. Each one of these three games have Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals depending on how good you are at the games. This encourages people to keep coming back to improve, and to share their progress with friends. There's even two special medals beyond gold for people who are really skilled and dedicated! 🥇

  2. Inspired by snap score and snap streak, you have a fit score and fitness streak to motivate daily exercise. 👻🔥

  3. See how your strength improves with your workout history. Track different moves like lunges, squats, knee raises for abs. Plan out sets so you can switch between pullups and pushups, having an automated coach journal your workout circuits.
