Inspiration

My niece says “Everyone else has Instagram. Why can't I?”

It's a conversation happening in homes everywhere. Teens want independence but parents seek security, they say a flat yes, no, or not yet.

I built LevelUp around a simple idea: What if kids could practice responsibility before being given more freedom?

What it does

LevelUp turns everyday child's/teen's requests like Instagram, Roblox, ChatGPT, a first phone, or starting a YouTube channel into opportunities to build trust.

Teens complete realistic safety missions, make decisions, explore consequences, and explain their thinking. Parents review their choices and decide together what comes next.

No spying here. Just better conversations, growing confidence, and a little motivation from our animated star jar! (My Fav feature!)

How I built it

I built LevelUp as a mobile-first app using React Native, Expo, and TypeScript.

The prototype includes 8 digital-life use cases, 24 interactive missions, parent review and approval, progress tracking, and gamified rewards. Progress is saved locally, with a same-device parent review experience.

Challenges Iran into

My first prototype felt like a quiz dressed up as a game. That's ofcourse not something teens would be excited to use! I reworked the experience around realistic situations, and meaningful choices, instead of right-or-wrong scores. The hardest design challenge was balancing child safety, independence, and parental trust without making it look like a surveillance app.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I turned a simple parent-teen disagreement into a working mobile experience.

My favorite part? The star jar. Every completed mission becomes a small celebration of progress, while parents and teens work toward agreed milestones.

I'm also proud that parents see their child's reasoning, not just a score and children have a voice in decisions affecting their digital lives.

What I learned

Child safety isn't always about stopping children from doing things. Sometimes it's about preparing them to do those things safely.

What's next for LevelUp

I want to make missions truly adaptive with a safeguarded AI coach that responds to teens' reasoning and helps them explore different outcomes. Next come secure parent-child accounts, more real-world scenarios, educator-supported learning, and testing with families. My bigger vision: Make digital independence something families build together, one brave step at a time.
