Letting go is something we all struggle with at one point or another, there should always be more tools and experiences that help people with mental burdens. We wanted to harness interaction to have our user let go of something both physically by releasing a lantern into the sky and metaphorically by speaking the words aloud. Lantern festivals are a beautiful, peace-bringing, community gathering phenomenon; expanding that to a digital space connects the experience to the entire world, anywhere and anytime.
What it does
Upon loading the lens, affirming poetry is displayed. By reaching out to the butterfly, you can hold and release a lantern with your spoken words of what you wish to let go of. The lantern rises and splits into butterflies, that circle and eventually fade away into the distance.
How we built it
We used Blender for creating the meshes and animation, and Lens Studio for the text and all functionality of the project.
Challenges we ran into
We had a number of issues with getting Lens Studio to work correctly within our project, as well as issues during the animation process of the lantern.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although our project did not reach the epic heights we had originally planned, we are very proud for the level of simplification we were able to achieve of such a feature-rich vision in a small amount of working hours. The fact that we were able to create what we did with only three people who have never touched code before is celebration worthy!
What we learned
We learned a lot about Lens Studio, scripting within it and getting them to play nicely with each other! We also learned more weird niche blender things.
What's next for Letting Go
Having multiple spectacles connected together, ability to see other peoples' previously released lanterns out in the sky, different variations of lanterns, automatic placement of your spoken words onto the lantern, better visual effects for lantern dissipation,
