Inspiration
I’ve always developed small games to learn various programming and platforms. I have refined the water from an original liquid-fun C project and have since modified it to work on web and have other effects like drip. I wanted to make a word game that hasn’t quite been done before that utilized the water effects.
What it does
A word game with random words based on certain selection criteria from a dictionary. This allows each play to be unique, even for me the creator/dev. Can be expanded to include different criteria and obstacles (which I plan to do)
How we built it
Lots of ai obviously but I have made sure to not make it ‘look’ like ai by doing more of the design. Ai has helped me as solo dev to focus more on the design aspects which is more enjoyable to me. Using phaser and typescript as the main engine - and box2d with liquidfun as the physics for letters and water effects.
Challenges we ran into
Having it run on mobile devices efficiently. Included a battery saver mode but I think normal 60 fps still runs good tested on iPhone 15 and iPad Pro m1. Also trying to synchronize physics coordinates with the graphic coordinate system mixed with the water/liquid physics had some minor issues but resolved.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Proud of getting the liquid / water. It’s relatively efficient for the effects and works on all sorts of devices and how everything scales in portrait mode.
What we learned
Development is hard. I knew this but every time it hits home a little more (lol)..
What's next for LetterRain
I want to add a couple more difficulties. Right now it’s single words between 2-5 characters. Medium difficult will have multi word (phrases) and a hard difficulty would be Caregories based like ‘Cities’ or ‘Fruits’ or ‘Famous Dates’ which would have more focus on trivia. Also I want to always be adding more customizations and challenges.
