Inspiration
Letterboxd is a popular application which allows you to discover and rate thousands of movies. While the interface is intuitive and easy to use, it is also quite modern. We miss software from the 2000s and wanted to bring back that vibe while keeping the functionality of Letterboxd. So then came Letterboxd2000.
What it does
Letterboxd2000 is a desktop application which acts similar to the original Letterboxd, with a few improvements. It displays the most popular movies this week and the most popular movies in this week 20 years ago, useful for if you want to browse a movie catalog as if it was still the 2000s. Discover hidden gems and rewatch your old favourites.
What it does
Desktop app that lets you look at new releases of movies and movies from 2003 which were new at the time. You can search by movie name by actor name and much more! You can log movies and add them to your watchlist :D
How we built it
Using Haskell and the ‘Fudgets’ library from 2003 so it was already retro! We used the tmdb api to get all of the movies information.
Challenges we ran into
We were unable to add images because the image format that Fudgets uses is incompatible with the image format that TMDB uses.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Getting a whole UI in fully purely functional programming
- Data science and getting jupyternotebook to work ## What we learned We learned that it is possible to write a desktop app using Haskell for the fronted and backend, and that Fudgets works well when trying to make it look like it was made 20 years ago. We also learned that we maybe need a bit more than 24 hours to make a new version of Letterboxd!
What's next for Letterboxd2000
Going forward we have a lot of ideas, but our first step is to make the UI look more similar to our initial idea.
Built With
