Inspiration
Dorming with an international roommate was a transformative experience that exposed me to different cultures, languages, and totally different lifestyles. Having grown up in entirely different circumstances, you would understand that many individuals, not just my roommate, struggled with learning a language and communicating with those around them. The power of language and communication is so important. It would be amazing if we gave those who struggle with languages the ability to truly understand and connect with the people around them.
What it does
Our webpage application is the first step to improving communication between all types of languages. With the use of Whisper AI and DeepL we created a program that will change and strengthen the way we communicate with one another.
By pressing our program to start recording, the program will listen to all user inputs and understand exactly what the user is saying, even in languages that aren't English! The program will compute the chosen translation to play back to the designated user so that they would receive the translated version. Languages will be translated and all messages will be understood.
How we built it
We built our project using all the knowledge that we have gained throughout this past year in college. As a group of 3 CS students from differing schools, we came together with differing skills in an attempt to create something impactful at Cal Hacks. We challenged ourselves by learning about AI, flask, and a variety of programming skills to build this project.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many individual technical issues as well as integration issues when we were trying to combine our front and back-end work. And although these challenges caused setbacks in our work, they were necessary stepping stones that we needed to cross in the attempt to learn more.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were really proud of finishing our project at this Cal Hacks because we came into the Hackathon thinking we were not experienced and knowledgeable enough to accomplish this.
What we learned
We learned a lot about GitHub, using API's, several different programing languages, flask, general troubleshooting, and the experience of an overnight hackathon.
What's next for LeTranslator
We envision LeTranslate to learn from individual inputs to help generate practice words to learn with your own AI. Another alternative is using global user input to keep track of and see what people around the world are often saying.
