Inspiration

  • Just like the story in the Bible where the world was created through the Word, programming services that utilize LLMs, such as bolt.new, felt like fascinating entities that could create something new out of natural language. This fresh impression became the seed for our project. We figured that since most people would create conventional services, it would be fun to experiment with bolt.new in a more experimental and creative direction.

What it does

  • 'Let there be light' is a simulator where you become a god and create a world. The user can directly and indirectly engage as their inputs give birth to elements in the world, form an ecosystem, create life, and watch them interact with one another.

How we built it

  • While we could have received help from other language models or services, we chose to build it from start to finish using only bolt.new. This was also intended to push the service's creativity, development capabilities, expressiveness, and debugging skills to their absolute limits.

  • What helped was utilizing the GitHub sync feature for proper version control and creating a separate guidelines.md file to structure instructions and our to-do list. Furthermore, actively using a "discussion mode" to have thorough conversations when refactoring regularly or contemplating architectural design helped us collaboratively find better solutions.

Challenges we ran into

  • As the code grew, files multiplied, and various logics were added, the workflow became slower. The frequency of generating errors increased, and its ability to understand or execute commands gradually deteriorated. At times, we ran into trouble by getting stuck in an infinite loop of errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • First and foremost, we are proud of faithfully implementing the initial concept. While I won't say more to avoid spoilers, there are various hidden interactions between the environment and the creatures. These features were also refined through repeated development and testing. The process of building everything from the macroscopic to the microscopic with bolt.new was both intriguing and joyful.

What we learned

  • A chronic issue with all LLMs is that the quality of conversation and development deteriorates as the dialogue gets longer or the number of files increases due to the context window size. We learned that keeping this in mind is crucial. To mitigate this, investing energy in version control, creating development guidelines for the LLM, managing a to-do list, and refactoring will be beneficial for developing larger, long-term projects.

What's next for Let there be light

  • Due to the limited tokens provided, we couldn't implement everything we had in mind. It's true that even in the current version, there are many incomplete parts, errors, and aspects we are personally not satisfied with. We will first spend time refining these areas. After that, we plan to purchase a domain, connect the service, and release it to the public. We expect this will provide an opportunity for 'Let there be light' to grow further. Looking ahead, we are also considering releasing it on mobile app stores.
