Inspiration
What is a stone if not a form of rock? What is a Game Jam if not an excuse for me to stretch the limits of a 'solid' theme (haha, get it?).
This game follows Rocky, our favourite Rock City resident, on his quest to beat his arch rival Paper-and-The-Machine in an Epic Rock battle at Rock City's Battle of The Bands! But first, he needs to find a few more Geodes to upgrade his old guitar - an artist is only as good as their tools, right?
This is where you come in! Help Rocky collect his last few Geodes, whilst avoiding the clouds of acid rain which threaten to dissolve all rock residents and their Geode-filled wallets. Once he has enough Geodes, you'll need to help Rocky out when The Battle of The Bands turns sour. Help him Defeat Paper-and-The-Machine with the Mythical weapon once whispered of by your ancestors, and passed down to each generation through childhood games (Scissors).
Will Rock finally beat Paper? Or will Rocky's quest for musical victory be snubbed out once more?
What it does
This is a two level game:
The first level mixes the mechanics of a revolving platformer with flappy bird-style tap to fly mechanics to help Rocky collect as many Geodes as he can.
The second level is the final Boss Fight at Battle of The Bands.
How we built it
I built this game using the Phaser game engine (Javascript and html).
Art was made by me in Piskel, and video segments in Canva.
I DID NOT CREATE MY OWN AUDIO -> Audio is from ElevenLabs using free credits, and open source sound effects such as from BBC Sounds.
Challenges we ran into
I hate doing art work omg, it sucked. Doing both the art and the coding is hard, I won't attempt a Game Jam solo again.
My computer is also dying and my server kept crashing (womp womp)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It works, yayy! I'm actually quite proud of how the graphics turned out (even if they took way longer than expected).
I also love a good pun, so I'm happy that I managed to sneak a few in.
I was super busy on Saturday so this was made and planned over Friday evening and Sunday morning. I wasn't entirely sure if I was going to actually enter, so I didn't want to join a team in case I let them down.
Rogue challenge, but canva is not doing ok today and kept crashing. RIP intro video
What we learned
Pixel art is so hard waaaa. Time management is helpful. Sometimes I'm too over-confident and plan too much (I knew this anyway, I just never learn my lesson)
This is also the second game I've made, which is fun.
