Inspiration
After months of covid isolation and online classes, some of us find it hard to get used to socializing in person again. Furthermore, when you want to get together with friends on a whim, it sometimes does not work out as well. So we created an app that allows users to find others with the same app logged in nearby, allowing for quick spontaneous socialization.
What it does
When users open the app and log in using their google account, they can see their profile and a list of other users nearby sorted based on distance. Users can then tap on each user in the list to "connect" with them, allowing for the ability to form friends right around the corner!
How we built it
Using a core tech stack consisting of React, Node, Firebase, as well as google auth api to handle user authentication.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of setup issues related to the Node.js server and the databases, as this was personally my first time being heavily involved in the server side. Also, for the majority of our members it was their first hackathon, so getting used to the pacing required in hackathons and developing a solution so quickly was another big challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our first hackathon for the majority of team members! Successfully implementing google auth and finding location data for users.
What we learned
Learned a lot about how different parts of the frontend and backend work together to create a functional app Basics of MERN stack How to integrate Firebase database to project Improved skills in react
