Inspiration: I tried to learn Spanish previously but I was always stopped by complex grammar and rules. I just wanted to talk, without worrying about all those boring stuff. Most of the apps I tried were template based rules and were not open for me to talk whatever I want. I wanted an app like this, so I build one.
What it does: It talks with you. On the background it is a simple voice bot who is instructed to talk and teach. Once you say anything in Spanish, or English, it will encourage you to speak, fix your errors in a positive way and tell you next line you want to talk. So you just practice talking. Es app muy fasil para practicar!!
How we built it: I am a vibe coder I generated the code using Claude. The code is written in Python and front end is normal HTML CSS JS. The database used is Mongo DB Atlas, the free version. And the app is hosted in koyeb.
Challenges we ran into: The voice recognition tool used was initially browser-native tools. They were not able to read the English words well. So I used Eleven labs API to make it work. Even then it was not perfect. The reason is the prompt is asked the persona to be Spanish Teacher and it was not working well with English (Indian) accent.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: This is something I always wanted when I tried to learn Spanish myself. It is actually helping me practice, any time on anything. Also, so far I had only submitted the core part of the projects, but in this case I have tried to provide end to end solution. And I a happy to to that.
What we learned: There are so many things out there and software development is never ending process. I need to keep working to improve it all the time.
What's next for Let's Hablas: Voice enabled Spanish Conversation Tutor: I want to convert this in an app, both for ios and android. And if I get permission, I want to monitise this app.
