Inspiration

We were inspired by the MLH Theme of food and our own changing diets during quarantine.

With all this extra time on our hands and being stuck at home due to COVID-19, we all agreed that we had more time for cooking and baking in particular. However, we could all relate to the struggles of looking for meals that we were able and interested in making.

To combat this issue, we decided to use this hackathon as an opportunity to create a service that would find recipes that fit a person's own needs.

What it does

Our project is an easy to use website that includes a homepage, nutrition page, and a new recipes page. Our homepage includes basic information on what our project actually does and the nutrition page provides useful information on the impacts of having a nutritious diet.

The new recipes page is our main feature which finds recipes that fit the user's own specifications. The user can input their preferred meats, amount of calories, and the amount of time they are willing to spend on the recipe.

After submitting their preferences, the user can browse through recipes our program found that fit the user's specifications. Then, they can click on any recipe and they will be given information on the particular recipe, ingredients, and instructions.

How I built it

The front-end was built in the repl.it IDE using HTML and CSS.

The back-end was built with VSCode, node.js, js, rest, postman, beautiful-soup, and python.

Finally, we were able to merge both the front and back-end together using Github.

Challenges I ran into

At first, a challenge we faced was the uncertainty of our ideas and goals. We brainstormed various ideas of food-related services which changed over time as we became more clear on what we wanted to achieve in our final product as an informational search engine.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

It was very cool how we were all able to come up with a thought or idea and turn it into a tangible, working website by working together, helping each other and learning from one another. We were able to work so well together and forming a very strong team within a single weekend and create an awesome end product.

We also think that our product can be used in the real-world because of its practical features. As the creators, we have already found uses for our website in our own lives and we think other people could find it extremely useful too!

What I learned

  • strengthened skills in multiple platforms
  • learned how to merge the content of multiple platforms together

What's next for Let's Get This Bread!

  • implement some recipes for leftovers as well
