Inspiration
Growing up as a kid in a multi-lingual / multi-cultural environment, it was difficult for me really get into the books my English teachers assigned -- they were not relatable.
That changed when I read "The Kitchen God's Wife" by Amy Tan for a 10th grade book report (I got to choose the book). The book really resonated with me and I found myself re-reading some pages over and over. I began seeking more books that had the same intellectual and emotional impact on me, which naturally made books more and more accessible over time.
If I had more guidance, I could've been enjoying books sooner and those early years of High School English would've been more engaging.
While I designed this app for students, it can work for anyone who wants to get into the habit of reading more regularly.
Community Impact
There are a ton of benefits to reading for fun.
Academic success
- Students who read for pleasure tend to perform better in other subjects.
- Enhances brain activity (reading actually rewires your brain), memory and cognitive function.
Health
- Research shows that regular reading can lower blood pressure, reduce stress and improve sleep quality
Career benefits
- Boosts creativity.
- Increases empathy.
- Improves communication skills.
- Strengthened ability to think through complex problems.
- Leaders such as Bill Gates and Barack Obama credit much of their success to obsessive reading.
What it does
This app works in three parts:
- First it teaches you to read books more critically by guiding you through important points (i.e. themes, symbolism, character analysis, etc.) of a specific book you are reading.
- Next it helps you dig deeper by presenting thought provoking questions, providing text analysis of key passages and a chatbot that can discuss the book with you.
- Lastly it helps you find your next book by listing books with similar themes, or by suggestions books based on user input.
How we built it
I used PartyRock to build this app.
Challenges we ran into
My original goal for this app was to generate picture books for specific novels to serve more visual learners, but it was difficult to get accurate depictions that were also consistent.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was able to pivot and design an app that I plan to use myself.
What we learned
I got to work with different AI models, and was surprised to see how many unique combinations of apps are possible with the few components offered by PartyRock.
What's next for Let's get LITerature
