Use Case Title:

Open AI Supported Project Aimed at Encouraging Students to Write

Description:

Let Me Write, leveraging Open AI models, fosters K-12 students' writing skills through engaging tasks based on chosen literary excerpts. Tailored evaluations, mentorship, and personalized tasks in classic literature create an explorative learning journey, nurturing creativity and a deep love for writing while building upon individual student progress.

Tutorial for Use and Best Practices:

  1. First you have to login so that you can see your previous tasks.
  2. Select a text. After selecting you’ll be presented with a paragraph from the text.
  3. Now write a new paragraph, how would you continue if you were the writer?
  4. Click the evaluate button after you’re finished.
  5. In 20-30 second you’ll see your evaluation.
  6. You can access sidebar for your previous attempts. Best Practices:
  7. Write at least 150 characters.
  8. The evaluation is on consistency, style and variance. Make sure your paragraph is accountable for these criterion.
  9. Pay special attention to punctuation. Let Me Write is pretty picky about that!

Impacts on Learning:

Positive Impacts: Let Me Write transforms writing practice into an engaging and enjoyable activity. Students are encouraged to think critically, enhance their vocabulary, and unleash their creativity. It inspires them to explore classic literature and develop their unique writing styles. Limitations: While Let Me Write is a fantastic tool, this application exclusively utilizes books and the paragraphs within them. There should be age-related restrictions for these resources. Also the provided feedback is tailored for students but it might produce misleading review or disappointing comments for the student.

Limitations and Ethical Considerations:

In acknowledging the ethical dimensions of our project, it is important to recognize that Open AI models, while a valuable tool, has its inherent limitations. Occasionally, it may provide information that is not entirely accurate. More, It might not always match the depth offered by human educators. We encourage the use of Open AI models as a supplement to traditional learning and emphasize the importance of critical thinking. Internet access and platform availability are prerequisites, potentially excluding some students

Inspiration

We all remember those moments from our school days: being immersed in a story, not wanting it to end, and imagining countless possible continuations. K-12 students possess a vibrant imagination and an innate love for crafting narratives. It's this universal love for stories among students that inspired "Let Me Write". We wanted to create a bridge between their imagination and the world of classic literature, providing a unique platform for their creativity to flourish.

What it does

It offers students a set of literary texts and prompt them to write the continuation paragraph. Then provides feedback on how consistent, varianted and stylistic their text is.

How we built it

Let Me Write is a Nextjs app integrated with OpenAI API's to provide evaluation for the students, simple yet effective idea! It uses langchain library to provide consistent feedback and Clerk for authentication.

Challenges we ran into

Selecting age-appropriate literary excerpts was a key challenge. Moreover, ensuring the AI feedback was constructive, yet always encouraging, was essential. We aimed for a balance where technology assisted but never overshadowed the student's creative voice.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Writing an LLM app from scratch is not an easy task, in such a short time we were able to create an app that real students can benefit from.

What we learned

User Feedback is Gold: K-12 students gave ideas that shaped our platform. AI + Human Balance: ChatGPT's feedback is great, but we must remember to keep the young writer's voice. Fun Matters: If it's not engaging, kids won't be interested. Mixing classic literature with writing tasks made a difference.

What's next for Let Me Write

More Books: We plan to add more stories from around the world. Group Writing: Soon, students can team up and write stories together. Tailored Learning: We're working on making sure each student gets suggestions just for them.
