Our project is a management game where you play as the property manager of your own apartment building.
Inspiration
The theme of "Limited Space" led us to be inspired by the pressing societal issue of the housing crisis in Canada. We wanted to encapsulate the complexities that tenants might face when looking for somewhere to live. We decided to take a different perspective on the issue, and created our game from the perspective of a property manager. Players are faced with the difficult task of balancing the limited apartment space, economic needs, and ethical dilemmas. By immersing players in this role, we aimed to represent a small part of the complex reality of the housing crisis.
What it does
In "Let Me Lease", you play as the property manager and have to balance the happiness of tenants with your own economic needs. The core gameplay is fast-paced decision making where you choose between two tenant's profiles to decide who will stay and who will go, as more and more people come by looking for a home. Our game features dynamic background idle animations and randomly generated characters.
How we built it
We built our game using the Godot game engine. We found and customized graphics assets online.
Challenges we ran into
A major challenge we ran into was the learning curve of migrating from Unity to Godot. We decided to try out Godot as we heard of its powerful and agile development capabilities. Adapting to its unique workflow presented a steep learning curve, especially in relation to the animations of sprites and the logic behind saving a game state.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Overall, we are so proud of how polished our project Let me Lease looks so far. We put a lot of work not only into the graphics of the game, but also into the functionality and code behind our project. We are proud to say that we ensured it is completely functional and bug free
What we learned
As mentioned above, the adaptation to Godot's unique workflow was a major learning curve for us. Now that we have experience using it, we will continue to make even more complex and polished games.
What's next for Let me Lease
While the base game was completely done in under 24 hours, we have a lot of ideas regarding additional functionality and actions the players will be able to take, as well as a more complex story and interactions between NPCs.
