Inspiration
Given the theme of "Job Security", our team thought of the many ways that we could've been supported during our job hunts. We all found that it was sometimes a little troublesome to keep track of job applications, so we decided to build a Job Application Tracker website.
What it does
The purpose of this website is to help users track the tasks that they need to complete while job hunting, as well as the statuses of each application that they have already submitted.
How we built it
We built this website using HTML, CSS, BootStrap, JavaScript, and Firebase.
Challenges we ran into
As first time hackers, we ran into a few challenges including time constraints, limited knowledge of the programming languages, and figuring out how to get our CSS to display properly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of the fact that we were able to build nice looking website in such a short amount of time. We managed to get the core function of it being an application tracker working - as a user makes new entries, the front page updates with the top three most recent applications that have had their statuses updated most recently.
What we learned
We learned a lot about teamwork during this hackathon. We were able to successfully divide up the parts between our members, and were also able to help each other and swap tasks as needed.
We also learned more about how our website interacts with a database like Firebase to retrieve data and populate the fields on the website. Prior to this event, our only experience with Firebase was from our Projects course (COMP1800). Working more with this technology helped us to learn a lot more about back-end development.
What's next for PlanIt
Our team is hoping to finish all the incomplete features of the website and given more time, we aim to continue improving our UI/UX as we continue with our education in BCIT's CST Program.
