Inspiration: It is hard in today's news landscape for readers to identify the political slant or agenda behind the articles they consume. We wanted to help make people less vulnerable to hidden bias and misinformation.
What it does: It uses an API to examine a link the user pastes into an input box on our website. The API then gives a precent bias and returns to the frontend and then it is printed out for the user to see. There is a page on resources so they can become media literate without relying on our site.
How we built it: We started in figma to get basic design then moved to sublime text to make the website. We coded on different computers for different pages and then copied and pasted the code into one sole computer because sublime is not a collaborative framework. After getting the HTML and the CSS where we wanted it we then worked on a bar that would show the user how biased there source and animate it bar to reflect that percentage. We had it hardcoded until we figured out the API. The next step after a nap was the API. For the API we needed it to read a source and then determine its bias we used Gemini for this. In the sublime text we created a front end and back end to our website which was the hardest part of the project to get them to communicate and read the file properly. After many testing it worked and now we're not allowed to touch anything.
Challenges we ran into: Figma we had issues exporting figma into actual HTML and css code so we had to do it manually in sublime which added hours to our project. Second was the animating the bar which we did on sublime but it was a lot of commutation between the javascript, HTML, and a single misspelling would throw it all off. The last problem and that took tries was the API. We worked on the API 5 yesterday and finished today at 9. The issues were with files not being found and miscommicaution between files and folders and the fact that no of us used backend or front before.
Accomplishments that we're proud of: the website, finishing, the API working, the animation bar
What we learned: We learned/refreshed on sublime text which taught us HTML, css, javascript, that the API cannot run in frontend of the website, basic use of figma, cursor from a failed attempt at API, visual code from a failed attempt at making the website.
What's next for Lens: It works don't touch it number 1 rule of code
