Inspiration

Although our team comes from very different neighborhoods, we understand the incredible value a tight knit community offers, where neighbors are selfless and caring for each other. This was why the Civic Engagement award peaked our interest more than anything else, as the impact a positive app could affect real change in the ordinary's person life. We decided to take this event as an opportunity to dip our toes in the water, with possible future projects in mind.

What it does

Our mobile app allows for members of local communities to connect with each other and offer help in times of need. Every user is able to request a favor in the local area and likewise, every user is also able to complete favors for other members of their town. At the moment we have implemented functionality to request favors, as well as functionality to respond to favors, and get real time locations of where they'd take place.

How we built it

We built this app with React Native with scalability in mind. React Native makes our code portable and easily accessible to virtually anyone with a computer. The framework currently runs on both iOS and Android, with web app integration coming in the near future.

Challenges we ran into

Thankfully we ran into typical challenges in this development cycle--unexpected bugs taking a few hours to fix, drastically underestimating development time, etc. Unique to HackBU however, was the struggle of coding on literally thirty minutes of sleep. That was difficult.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of the database integration with our app, and the UI we built in very little time.

What we learned

Collectively, we learned not to code on very little sleep! The development process slowed greatly towards the middle of the night, and bugs seemed to multiply.

What's next for LendaHand

Our team would like to either continue this project in our free time, or utilize the UI and database integration in another joint project.
