Inspiration
Modern families are busier than ever, and meaningful time between parents and children often gets squeezed between school, work, and daily routines.
We wanted to create something that turns everyday responsibilities—like chores, learning, and exercise—into a shared journey of growth and connection rather than obligations.
Inspired by cozy games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, we imagined a magical companion that guides families through daily life in a warm, encouraging way. That idea became Lena’s Homestead.
What it does
Lena’s Homestead is an AI-powered family companion app that helps parents guide their children’s growth through quests, goals, and shared activities.
The app introduces three core loops:
Daily Quests AI generates personalized quests that encourage learning, exercise, and responsibility.
Goal Progress Children earn glowing seeds by completing quests and progress toward meaningful goals like saving for a birthday gift.
Homestead Moments The AI suggests short activities parents and children can do together, with proximity verification and a shared activity timer.
Over time, the system learns a child’s interests and recommends activities tailored to them.
How we built it
We built Lena’s Homestead as a mobile-first web application with a lightweight architecture designed for rapid prototyping.
The frontend was developed using Next.js and React with TailwindCSS for a cozy and responsive UI.
AI functionality is powered by OpenAI, which generates daily quests and family activity suggestions.
To make the experience more engaging for children, Lena—the flower nymph mascot—speaks using ElevenLabs voice synthesis.
Location-based features use browser geolocation and a Haversine distance calculation to verify that parents and children are together when completing family activities.
The system architecture was designed around a family household model, allowing multiple children and contextual AI recommendations.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was balancing AI flexibility with a structured experience for children.
We needed the AI to generate varied quests while ensuring they remained appropriate, achievable, and meaningful.
Another challenge was designing a system that supports multiple children within a family context while still allowing each child to have personalized goals, quests, and preferences.
We also needed to simulate backend functionality using local state and lightweight logic to keep the MVP fast and simple enough for a hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a system that feels more like a cozy companion than a productivity tool.
Key accomplishments include:
• Designing a family-centered AI system rather than a single-user productivity app
• Building a complete behavioral loop with quests, streaks, and goals
• Creating a playful and inviting interface inspired by cozy games
• Integrating AI-generated quests and activity suggestions
• Bringing the mascot Lena to life with voice interactions
The result is an experience that makes everyday growth feel magical.
What we learned
Through this project we learned how powerful AI can be when combined with thoughtful behavioral design.
Rather than replacing parenting, AI works best as a guide that helps parents support their children’s development.
We also learned the importance of designing around human relationships rather than just individual users.
