Inspiration

For a lot of people, a beer after work feels like the most normal thing in the world. In many places drinking is simply part of the culture, so nobody questions it, and it often turns into a daily habit without anyone really deciding that. Kids and people around us notice what we do every day, and many of us would like to set a different example. Most quitting apps ask for an account or collect your data, which is the last thing you want when the topic is this personal. That's why I built Lemon Soda: a simple, private companion that keeps everything on your device. The name comes from soda with lemon, a great non-alcoholic alternative to a beer.

What it does

It’s very simple. It has basically 5 steps.

1: Onboarding and Motivation - it’s basically an explanation and setting the motivational background and a sentence that motivates you to stay strong. 2: A button you can press every day that adds a day to the counter, showing what you have already reached. 3: A button that you can press if you were not strong enough today - the count doesn’t add a number but remains as it is, without starting from 0 again (not blaming). 4: A button that gives a hand. It either shows a motivation or a reason that convinces you of why you are doing it. 5: Reaching milestones and earning badges.

How we built it

Lemon Soda is a simple PWA: plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript, no framework, no build step, no backend. Quitting a habit is personal, so I made sure nothing leaves your phone, on purpose. Your days, language and sentence are saved in localStorage, and your photo gets shrunk and stored in IndexedDB. No accounts, no servers, no tracking. A service worker lets it work offline and you can add it to your home screen. It’s in English, German and Spanish, I wrote Node tests for the main rules, and it runs on Vercel with analytics turned off.

Challenges we ran into

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As this is my second project in this hackathon format, I could build it much more structured and clearer, and it came out almost exactly as I wanted it. Few changes after. I’m also proud that I built something useful that could help many people in the most anonymous way. Even the logo is not showing what it’s for, and also, using the app, nobody would suspect anything.

What we learned

I learned that good planning and a clear vision of what the outcome should look like are like 95% of the effort of coding with an agent.

What's next for Lemon Soda - No alcohol today

I want to add other habits to choose from: smoking, drugs, gambling...

As it’s not a substitute for therapy or professional help but a personal helper, it’s not meant for people with hard addictions. It’s more for people who want to change but are stuck. That’s clearly labeled in the app.
