Inspiration
Food often goes to waste after club events and meetings, even though many students are still on campus and would be willing to take the food. We wanted to solve this issue by creating a platform that connects students to these opportunities, reducing food waste and helping students who are looking for free meals.
What it does
Our platform serves as a forum for students to post and see where there is leftover food on campus. After an event, club members can quickly post the location and details of any remaining food, and other students can browse to see available meals near them.
How we built it
We built the platform with SQLite as our database for storing users and posts. The front end was developed with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, ensuring a responsive design. We also integrated Python for backend logic to handle user interactions and posting systems.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was ensuring that the platform remained easy to use and intuitive, especially for students on the go. We also ran into technical issues with managing server resources on the EC2 instance and efficiently querying the SQLite database to handle updates in real-time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have developed a fully functional platform that helps reduce food waste on campus. We managed to create an intuitive user interface that encourages community engagement. We were happy to implement our initial goal of supplying food to people on campus.
What we learned
We learned a lot about website hosting, database management, and real-time data handling. Additionally, we gained experience with AWS services.. Most importantly, we learned the importance of clear communication between the front and back ends to ensure a seamless user experience.
