Available in the Chrome Web StoreAvailable For Microsoft Edge

Project Overview

LegiBrowse is a browser extension designed to enhance web accessibility by automatically replacing all fonts possible on a webpage with the Atkinson Hyperlegible font. This font, developed by the Braille Institute and used under license, is optimized for maximum legibility, making it ideal for individuals with visual impairments or those who struggle with reading standard web fonts. By improving the clarity and readability of text across all websites, LegiBrowse addresses a key accessibility challenge, reducing eye strain and enhancing the overall browsing experience for users who need clearer, more distinguishable text. This extension plays an important role in making the web more inclusive for everyone.

Functionality Demo

As of the week of submission, LegiBrowse has already passed review and is starting to become available in extension stores for web browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge!

The extension can also be downloaded and installed manually in Chromium based browsers (Brave, etc.) by following these steps after downloading the extension package from the LegiBrowse releases page.

Code Submission

The code for LegiBrowse is available and documented on GitHub!

Impact Statement

LegiBrowse creates a positive social impact by promoting inclusivity and accessibility on the web. By replacing all fonts on a webpage with the Atkinson Hyperlegible font, LegiBrowse ensures that users with visual impairments or reading difficulties can access content more easily. This reduces barriers to information and makes online environments more welcoming to individuals who may struggle with traditional web fonts. The extension also benefits users who experience eye strain or fatigue from prolonged screen time, making the browsing experience more comfortable for a wider audience. By prioritizing accessibility, LegiBrowse contributes to building a more equitable digital space where everyone can engage with online content on equal terms.

Technology Stack

What's next for LegiBrowse - Free Browser Extension for Legibility

The WXT Framework provides tooling to bundle extensions for different browsers from the same source code. I plan on working on versions of LegiBrowse for the Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari extension stores in the near future. Other features that may come in the future are a dropdown that allows users to select other open fonts for accessibility, such as OpenDyslexic, and ways to manipulate the sizes of fonts from the extension.
