Inspiration

LegalSHEield addresses SDG 5: Gender Equality, it was born out of a simple but powerful idea, that no woman should ever feel powerless or alone when facing injustice. We were inspired by the countless stories of women worldwide who experience harassment, discrimination, or violence but are unable to access affordable or approachable legal help. Often, fear, cost, and lack of awareness keep them from seeking justice. We wanted to build more than just an app, we wanted to create a compassionate digital ally that listens, guides, and empowers women to take action confidently.

What it does

LegalSHEield is a web-based platform that provides free, private, and AI-driven legal support tailored specifically for women. It helps users understand their rights in simple, accessible language and offers actionable next steps through features like a conversational AI legal assistant, automated document generation for formal complaints and petitions, and a directory of verified helplines, shelters, and legal aid services. With built-in privacy and voice-enabled support, LegalSHEield ensures that women of all backgrounds and literacy levels can access justice without fear or barriers.

How we built it

We built LegalSHEield using a combination of modern web technologies and AI tools. The frontend was designed with a clean, safe, and approachable interface to make users feel secure when seeking help. We integrated OpenAI’s language model to power our AI legal assistant, enabling it to understand complex questions and respond with simple, region-aware guidance. For accessibility, we added text-to-speech features for users with reading or visual challenges. We also developed a database of global resources, allowing women to quickly locate emergency contacts.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was balancing legal accuracy with simplicity. We wanted LegalSHEield to be both understandable and reliable, which meant carefully crafting prompts and training responses to avoid misinformation. Another challenge was ensuring privacy and security, as protecting user data is critical when dealing with sensitive issues like harassment and domestic violence. Lastly, building voice accessibility and integrating real-time document generation while working within hackathon time limits pushed us to innovate quickly without compromising user experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud that in just a short time, we built something that has the potential to make a real impact. Seeing LegalSHEield successfully explain complex legal rights in plain, empathetic language and generate ready-to-use legal documents felt like a breakthrough. We’re also proud of designing a platform that feels safe and welcoming a space where women can ask questions without judgment and receive immediate, confidential guidance. Most importantly, we’re proud that LegalSHEield represents hope and empowerment for women who might otherwise feel voiceless.

What we learned

Throughout this journey, we learned that technology can be a powerful force for justice when built with empathy and purpose. We discovered how to structure AI responses for clarity and compassion, how to design with inclusivity in mind, and how critical accessibility is when addressing global challenges. We also learned the importance of collaboration, as every decision, from features to user flow, required us to think deeply about the real women who would rely on this platform.

What's next for LegalSHEield

LegalSHEield is just the beginning. Moving forward, we plan to expand its legal coverage to include more regions and laws, making it a truly global tool for women’s justice. We envision adding live chat with volunteer lawyers, community forums for peer support, and partnerships with NGOs to provide real-world assistance alongside digital guidance. Our ultimate goal is to launch LegalSHEield as a fully accessible platform and mobile app that empowers millions of women to reclaim their rights, find safety, and stand strong against injustice
