Inspiration
India has 1.4 lawyers per 1,000 people and 5+ crore pending cases. Most people — tenants, junior employees, small business owners — have no idea what laws apply to their situation or what their rights are. The information exists in IPC, CrPC, BNS, Consumer Protection Act, but it's locked behind dense legal language and paywalls.
LegalMinds bridges that gap. Describe your situation in plain English or Hindi, get a clear answer in 30 seconds.
What it does
Users describe a legal situation, and LegalMinds returns a structured analysis grounded in actual Indian statutes:
- Applicable laws with cited section text (IPC, CrPC, BNS, BNSS, Consumer Protection Act, IT Act, DV Act, and more)
- Your rights in this situation
- Possible penalties and outcomes
- Numbered next-step checklist
- Timeline and cost estimates
- Confidence and severity indicators
- Bilingual: English and Hindi
- Downloadable PDF report
- DPDP Act 2023 compliant — no query storage, no tracking
How we built it
- Stack: Next.js 14, TypeScript, Tailwind, deployed on Vercel
- AI: Groq for low-latency inference
- Citation grounding: Curated statute database of 60+ sections — the LLM cites only from this, preventing hallucinated section numbers
- Structured output: Strict JSON schema rendered as discrete cards, not prose
- Compliance: DPDP Act 2023 + IT Act 2000 grievance mechanism built in from day one
Challenges
- Stopping the LLM from inventing section numbers — solved with curated statute grounding
- Producing clean Hindi output instead of code-mixed Hinglish
- Balancing legal precision with plain-language accessibility — solved with dual summary + detailed views
- Drafting real DPDP-compliant privacy policies (a non-coding effort that most hackathon projects skip)
Accomplishments
- Fully deployed bilingual legal AI for India
- DPDP Act 2023 compliance on day one
- Citation grounding that prevents legal hallucination
- Coverage of both old (IPC/CrPC) and new (BNS/BNSS) Indian criminal codes
- No login required — accessibility first
What we learned
Legal AI is about retrieval and grounding, not generation. Compliance is a feature, not overhead. Bilingual is design, not translation. Structured output beats prose blobs every time.
What's next
Document/image OCR ingestion, more Indian languages, lawyer matchmaking, legal aid integration and case-law retrieval.
