Inspiration
Traditional verification of weighing and measuring instruments can involve paperwork, delays, and certificates that are difficult to authenticate. We wanted to build a digital-first solution that improves transparency, protects consumers, and makes compliance easier for traders and government officers.
What it does
LegalMetrix is a digital verification platform for weighing and measuring instruments. It enables instrument registration, online verification applications, inspection tracking, and digital certificate generation. QR codes allow anyone to check certificate validity, while automated expiry reminders help prevent overdue instruments from going unnoticed.
How we built it
We designed LegalMetrix using a modular architecture with a React web frontend, FastAPI backend, and PostgreSQL database. The platform uses role-based access control for different stakeholders, digital inspection records, QR-enabled PDF certificates, SHA-256 hashing for tamper detection, and automated workflows for verification and renewal. The architecture also supports field inspections, geolocation, and future AI-assisted guidance.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a reliable end-to-end verification workflow was a key challenge. We needed to coordinate different user roles, maintain consistent application statuses, protect sensitive information, and ensure that certificates remain verifiable. Integrating field inspection data, QR verification, and tamper detection also required careful API design and coordination across modules.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We developed a solution concept that connects instrument registration, verification, inspection, and digital certification in one platform. We are particularly proud of the digital instrument record, QR-based public verification, and tamper-evident certificate approach, which put transparency and trust at the centre of the system.
What we learned
We learned the importance of designing clear API contracts, implementing role-based security, maintaining reliable audit trails, and coordinating frontend, backend, and field workflows. We also learned that digital transformation in regulatory systems requires more than digitising forms—it requires verifiable records, accountable processes, and accessible user experiences.
What's next for LegalMetrix
Our next steps are to complete and test the end-to-end workflow, strengthen security and deployment, and improve dashboards and expiry notifications. We also plan to expand multilingual support, enable offline-first field inspections, introduce an AI assistant that provides answers with source citations, and explore integrations with government services and digital payment systems.
