💡Inspiration

Legal information in India is often complex, expensive to access, and difficult for a common citizen to understand. We wanted to make legal knowledge simple, trustworthy, and available to everyone.

What it does

LegalMate is an AI-powered assistant for Indian legal queries. It explains laws, sections, and legal procedures in clear everyday language and guides users with legal awareness — not legal advice.

⚙️ How we built it

LegalMate is powered by LLM APIs, RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) for grounded legal information, structured prompt design, a query‑to‑prompt conversion engine, and multiple safety layers to ensure reliability. The frontend and backend were developed using Node.js and Next.js.

🚀 Key Innovations (What makes LegalMate stand out)

🔹 Nationwide Toll-Free Legal Helpline (First of its kind) Citizens will be able to dial a toll-free number to get instant voice-based legal awareness — no smartphone, app, or internet required. After the call:

• The user also receives the same response via SMS
• The SMS acts as proof of legal awareness — a record that the citizen sought help and understood their legal standing This bridges the justice divide, ensuring even rural and digitally-unconnected citizens receive equal empowerment.

🔹 Legal Explanations in Regional Languages LegalMate will support multiple Indian languages to help users understand the law in their native tongue.

🔹 Automatic FIR & Document Explanation System Users can upload legal documents and get clear, simplified interpretations — eliminating dependency on intermediaries.

🔹 Case Reference Suggestion System LegalMate will recommend relevant legal sections, previous judgments, and likely next steps based on the user’s situation.

🔹 Guided Legal Pathways, Not Legal Advice A safety-first design that informs users responsibly without replacing lawyers — maintaining legal compliance while building user trust.

Challenges we faced

Ensuring the AI stayed strictly within Indian law, preventing legal advice, simplifying complex legal jargon, and handling ambiguous or sensitive queries responsibly.

Accomplishments

LegalMate is currently a simple working chatbot prototype that performs RAG-based retrieval and uses LLM APIs to convert user queries into structured legal-aware prompts. Even in its early stage, it successfully demonstrates how AI can simplify legal information and make it understandable for citizens.

What we learned

Responsible AI is essential. Prompt engineering significantly influences response quality, and simplifying legal content greatly improves accessibility and user trust.
