Inspiration
Hi, I'm Rajat Tiwari. I built LegalAssistant because most people don't know their basic legal rights — like knowing a tenant deserves their security deposit back, or that police must register an FIR. The laws exist, but they're buried in jargon most people can't access when they actually need them.
What it does
LegalAssistant has three parts:
- Ask a question — a chatbot that explains your legal rights in plain language.
- Learn about the law — detailed breakdowns of the actual law and step-by-step process for each issue.
- Find legal aid — a directory of free legal aid authorities across all Indian states/UTs, plus helplines like NALSA (15100), Women Helpline (181), and Cyber Crime Helpline (1930).
The goal: understand your problem → know the law → find real help, all in one place.
-> How I built it
I started with tenant and consumer rights, then expanded to cover 36 legal scenarios — workplace issues, cybercrime, domestic violence, property disputes, and more. The frontend is a self-contained HTML/CSS/JS app with a light/dark theme, styled to feel institutional rather than like a generic AI template. The chatbot backend runs on Vercel and calls Google's Gemini API (switched from Claude to keep it free and accessible), grounded strictly in a knowledge base I wrote so it never invents legal information.
-> Challenges ~ Switching AI providers: Built the backend around Claude first, then rewrote it for Gemini's free tier to avoid a paywall barrier. ~ First real deployment: Learning GitHub + Vercel + environment variables took a few tries — at one point I just deleted my repo and started fresh. ~ Keeping AI answers accurate: Made sure the chatbot only answers from verified content, and honestly says "I don't know" instead of guessing.
--> What I learned
Most people don't need a lawyer immediately — they need to know what their situation is called and where to go next. That's an information problem AI can genuinely help solve, as long as it stays grounded in accurate content.
What's next
Hindi/regional language support, verified directory updates from real legal aid clinics, and expanding the knowledge base with legal NGOs.
