Inspiration

Our inspiration was the real root cause of deforestation that we found in a news article. It stated that laws already exist to protect against deforestation, but due to government corruption and lack of governmental interest, these laws are not enforced; changing nothing in the fight against deforestation.

What it does

The game teaches the user about the message by forcing the user to fight against deforestation by planting trees and managing their resources in order to keep the forest alive. The game is unable to be won to represent our message that without real governmental action and enforcement, there can be no progress in the fight against deforestation.

How we built it

We built the game using pixi.js as a 2d rendering library. We used GitHub and visual studio code for live collaboration on the code. We used gimp to develop 2d sprites for our game.

Challenges we ran into

We dealt with issues in logistics and calculating how many trees were left to be harvested. We had a problem with our failsafe against incorrect calculations, but we were able to find the cause of it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we finished this game on time. We did not expect this to be complete by the end of the hackathon. We expected to have more of a time crunch on this project.

What we learned

We learned how to use Pixi.js as a rendering library, and javascript as a scripting language.

What's next for Legal Loggers

We plan to make the game more interactive, with more diverse types of trees, animals, and game endings. We also plan to add an ending to the game where loggers are enforced to replant the trees they cut down after the first ending of the game to display what would happen if laws were enforced, making deforestation less severe.
