Inspiration

The idea for Legal Debaffler was born out of pure frustration with complex, jargon-filled contracts and terms that most people are forced to “just accept.” Whether renting a flat, signing up for a service, or reviewing business agreements, I noticed that legal documents often obscure the most important information with dense, intimidating language. I wanted to create a tool that makes these documents truly accessible for everyone—so no one ever has to sign blindly again.

What it does

Legal Debaffler takes any legal document you paste in and instantly breaks it down into understandable, actionable language. It provides:

• A plain English summary of the document
• Key risks, “gotchas,” and obligations
• A friendly, section-by-section rewrite
• An actionable checklist based on the content
• Suggested follow-up questions for ambiguous or tricky clauses
• A clear, side-by-side comparison of original vs. simplified language

How I built it

Legal Debaffler was built as a single-prompt solution for the bolt.new hackathon. I designed a prompt that could take any pasted legal document and, in one step, deliver:

• A plain English summary
• Key risks and obligations
• A section-by-section friendly rewrite
• Actionable steps and suggested follow-up questions

All output is presented in a clear, side-by-side format to maximize usability and trust.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest challenge was guiding the AI to handle a wide range of legal documents—from NDAs to rental contracts—while staying accurate and user-friendly. Legal language is subtle, and over-simplification risks missing important details. I spent a lot of time tuning the prompt to find the right balance between simplicity and precision, as well as making the output feel approachable, not robotic.

Another challenge was ensuring the tool works well for users with zero legal background, while still offering value for more experienced users. Testing across different document types was key to making it robust.

What I learned

Building this project taught me the power and limitations of prompt engineering. The process forced me to deeply consider how to break down information for different user backgrounds, anticipate the “gotchas” in legal texts, and guide the AI to balance clarity with accuracy. I also gained insight into user expectations for instant, actionable results when dealing with high-stakes documents.

• Deeper customisation: Allow users to select document type for even smarter explanations.
• Export & share: Add options to export summaries and checklists as PDFs.
• Language & region support: Adapt outputs for different countries and legal systems.
• Interactive guidance: Integrate chatbot-style Q&A for follow-up clarification on tricky sections.
• Accessibility: Make the app even more user-friendly for those with disabilities or non-native English speakers.
