Legal Adviser Project Description
Inspiration
We identified a critical gap in the legal system: many people face everyday legal questions that don’t justify hiring a lawyer, yet trustworthy answers are difficult to find online. The complexity of legal jargon and the high cost of legal advice prevent individuals from making informed decisions. Our goal is to democratize access to basic legal information by bridging the gap between legal language and plain English understanding, empowering users to handle legal concerns with confidence and clarity.
What it does
Legal Adviser is an AI-powered legal assistant that provides instant, understandable answers to common legal questions. Users can:
- Browse categorized legal topics such as Employment, Consumer Rights, Housing, Family Law, etc.
- Submit questions in natural language with relevant situational context
- Receive clear, structured answers with actionable insights
- Access relevant legal references and government resources
- Get jurisdiction-specific information based on their location
- Maintain full privacy, with no personal data stored or logged
The platform transforms complex legal terminology into easy-to-understand language while ensuring legal safety and compliance through disclaimers and jurisdiction-aware responses.
How we built it
We developed Legal Adviser using a serverless architecture centered around AWS Lambda, which powers the backend logic and AI integration. Here's how the system works:
- Backend: AWS Lambda functions handle API requests, manage user sessions, and route natural language input to AI services
- Frontend: Built with React for a fast, responsive, and intuitive user interface
- AI Integration: Integrated with Google Gemini API through Lambda functions to deliver accurate, contextual responses
- Session Handling: Stateless design using API Gateway + Lambda ensures user privacy with no stored personal data
- Design: A clean, professional interface with a category-based navigation system for simplified legal exploration
- Jurisdiction Handling: Location-based logic via Lambda integrates local context into answers
- Privacy & Security: All operations are stateless, ensuring compliance with data privacy standards
Using AWS Lambda allowed us to create a cost-effective, scalable, and privacy-first system with minimal infrastructure overhead.
Challenges we ran into
- Legal Accuracy: Delivering legally accurate responses while making it clear the platform is not a substitute for professional legal advice
- Jurisdiction Support: Addressing differences in legal systems across regions
- Privacy Protection: Building a session-aware system without data retention or user tracking
- Prompt Design: Engineering prompts to generate accurate, structured, and legally appropriate responses
- Content Filtering: Ensuring harmful or inappropriate questions are moderated
- Source Referencing: Dynamically linking reliable legal resources and references
- User-Friendly Design: Balancing legal depth with simplicity in user interaction
