Inspiration

As law students, we often found ourselves buried under the weight of numerous case files, legal documents, and precedent-setting rulings. It became apparent that there was a massive gap in streamlining this immense load of information.

In the legal domain, we understand the burden of lawyers having to read through masses and masses of text just to scurry out precious little information. It became apparent that there was a huge gap between streamlining this immense load of information, taking some weight off the lawyers' shoulders and leave room for critical thinking instead. This led us to think: "What if there was an AI-driven solution that could alleviate this pressure?" And thus, LegAI was born.

What it does

LegAI acts as a personal legal assistant. It can read, analyze, and summarize case files in seconds. It suggests precedent cases, helps in drafting documents by auto-filling legal terminologies, and even anticipates potential legal arguments based on the data it has processed. It's not just a tool but a full-fledged legal aide.

How we built it

We utilized state-of-the-art natural language processing models, leveraging their capabilities to understand the intricate language of the legal world. A combination of cloud-based services and a bespoke algorithm tailored for legal terminologies gave birth to LegAI. Moreover, we crowdsourced feedback from practicing attorneys and professors to refine the AI's accuracy and relevance.

Challenges we ran into

Firstly, we have to determine what information was important that deserved focus on. Since legal language was complex, one of the major challenges was training the AI to differentiate between common legalese and the crux of the matter. Technical hurdles was also obviously a major factor, as we are trying to integrate the best of each person, which is not necessarily easy to amalgamate.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

LegAI was blazingly fast--much faster than we could have ever imagined. Langchain and parallel computing saved our lives. We also managed to integrate 2 databases--one vector, and one normal--which offered even more performance boost. We also successfully utilized Google CloudVision and Document AI, which helped us simplify a lot of the process and focus more on the technical skills instead.

What we learned

We learned that innovation in traditional fields like law is not just welcome but necessary. While there's respect for tradition in the legal field, there's also a thirst for tools that can modernize and expedite the process. We also understood the importance of data privacy, especially in sensitive areas like law.

What's next for LegAI

Our vision is to integrate LegAI into major legal platforms and make it accessible to law students for educational purposes. We're also looking at introducing features like voice command and real-time collaboration for legal teams. The future is to make LegAI synonymous with legal research and assistance.
