💡 Inspiration

During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in late 2019, I fell ill with a severe fever. Facing unknown risks, I secretly wrote down all my bank passwords and social accounts on a piece of paper and hid it deep inside my bottom drawer.

I didn't hand it to my parents directly because I didn't want to cause them premature panic. I thought: If I don't make it back, they will eventually find it; if I do survive, this paper remains a secret. That dilemma—wanting to leave a safety net without causing unnecessary anxiety—inspired Legacy Drop. It acts as that "hidden piece of paper" in the digital age. It remains invisible while you are well, and only delivers your most precious digital assets and final farewells when you unexpectedly go offline.

⚙️ What it does

Legacy Drop is a secure, automated, and deeply empathetic digital inheritance platform.

  • Silent Guardian: Users set an "inactivity threshold". The system runs quietly in the background without disturbing the user or their family.
  • The 72-Hour Cooldown: Once the threshold is breached, it triggers a 72-hour Cooldown Period, sending warning alerts via Resend (Email) and ServerChan (WeChat push). If it's a false alarm, the user can terminate the process instantly.
  • Zero-Knowledge Encrypted Vault: If the cooldown ends without intervention, a secure link is sent to the beneficiaries. They can decrypt the asset package (containing passwords and final audio/video messages) using AES-256 local decryption.

🛠️ How we built it

  • Platform: Built natively on the MeDo conversational development platform.
  • Frontend: Crafted with React and Tailwind CSS. We intentionally avoided cold, "cyberpunk" themes, opting for a clean, warm minimalist UI to convey trust and calmness.
  • Backend & Security: Powered by Supabase and Edge Functions to handle automated cron-jobs. We implemented local AES-256 encryption, ensuring the server never touches the plain-text passwords or personal videos.
  • Notification: Integrated with Resend and ServerChan.

🚧 Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge wasn't just technical; it was emotional design. We had to build a "Dead Man's Switch" that felt like a warm embrace rather than a grim reaper. Technically, ensuring the Edge Functions perfectly tracked the inactivity cron-jobs during the critical "72-hour Cooldown Period", while maintaining absolute zero-knowledge encryption, required precise logic optimization.

🧠 What we learned

We learned that the best technology is invisible and deeply human. Building a tool for end-of-life planning taught us that a digital will isn't just about data storage and cryptography; it's a final act of love and connection.

🚀 What's next

  • Adding multi-signature decryption, requiring multiple family members to approve the vault opening.
  • Integrating digital notary APIs to give the exported documents legal binding force.
