Inspiration

Food waste and food insecurity are two major issues, especially for college students who often struggle to afford meals. We wanted to create a solution that connects surplus food from restaurants to students in need, reducing waste while making meals more accessible. By leveraging technology, we aim to bridge this gap efficiently and sustainably.

What it does

Leftover Lasso is a web platform that allows restaurants and local businesses to list surplus food, which students can then find and claim through an interactive map. Restaurants can easily update available food in real time, and students can quickly see what’s nearby. The platform streamlines the process of redistributing excess food, helping both businesses reduce waste and students save money.

How we built it

We built Leftover Lasso using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MySQL, SQL, and PHP. The backend manages restaurant inventory and user data, while the frontend provides an intuitive interface for both restaurant managers and students. We used Google Maps integration to help students locate available food in real time. Our database is hosted using MySQL, and we’re currently running the project using PHP’s built-in server.
