Inspiration
The project is inspired by the challenges that were being experienced by the less fortunate in our society during the start of the corona virus period, were there were lockdowns were being implemented and were various individuals were being laid off from their works. from this various individuals were not able to fend for their families and required aid to provide a decent meal for their families. On the other hand restaurants waste a lot of food especially when it comes to buffet meals, where they are not able to plan or estimate the amount of individuals who will be dinning at their institution. Hence the Leftover food distribution system.
What it does
Wasting food is a common problem in our society, hence, a food leftover management system is crucial, since it can improve our environment and economic sustainability. There many hotels, restaurants, cafeterias and other hospitality organizations that produce more food for their customers than is required, leading to ample leftovers. When food rots it creates methane, which has twenty-one times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide. On the other hand, there many people in our country who lack food and are dying of hunger. This project intends to improve the hospitality sector in Kenya, by reducing the amount of food wastage it encounters from leftover foods by assisting the less fortunate through donation and selling to people who may want to acquire the meal but due some reasons they cannot access the service, hence distributed to them. This will be done through a mobile application system that allows hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, to distribute their leftover foods by posting and the logged in users can view and purchase the food, the aspect of donation will be done through charity organizations representing the less fortunate who will be receiving donations from the various hotels according to how they agree, it can be on monthly or weekly basis.
How we built it
The project was build in android studio, were there were various APIs that were implemented. the database used was firebase firestore.
Challenges we ran into
Some implemented features were not compatible with the system and it was some what challenging to alter the various so as to perform effectively on the application. Implementing various APIs was also challenging but we managed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The application was able to run and perform the major requirements, such as purchasing of foods from various hospitality organizations, to link charity organizations with the hospitality institutions
What we learned
Research and continuous trial and error enables one to learn more and understand a concept better.
What's next for Leftover Food Distribution System
The next step is to improve the system and add an effective user interaction with the application and research more on how to make it more marketable.
