Inspiration
Across Africa and other emerging markets, millions of people want to participate in the digital economy, yet access to practical education, personalized mentorship and career guidance remains limited. Online learning has made content more accessible, but learners are still often left to figure out what to learn, how to overcome difficult concepts, whether they are actually developing useful skills and what to do next.
Through our experience building LearnWay, we saw this problem firsthand. Learners did not simply need more content. They needed personalized guidance, continuous feedback, practical assessment and support that could adapt to their individual goals and progress.
The Build with Gemini XPRIZE gave us an opportunity to rethink the product around a fundamental question:
What if AI did not simply assist a learning platform, but actively operated key parts of the learning journey?
This inspired our pivot toward LearnWay AI, an AI-native learning product powered by Gemini that helps people build practical, career-relevant skills through personalized learning, intelligent mentorship, contextual tutoring and AI-powered assessment.
What We Built
LearnWay AI transforms a traditional learning experience into an intelligent system that can understand and respond to individual learners.
Gemini powers core experiences across the learning journey:
- AI Tutor provides contextual explanations and assistance while learners study.
- AI Mentor uses learner goals and progress to provide personalized guidance and recommend what to learn next.
- AI-powered assessments help evaluate learner understanding and provide actionable feedback.
- AI-assisted content workflows support the creation of learning materials and assessments.
- Personalized learning pathways help learners navigate courses based on their goals and progress.
- Multilingual capabilities help make educational content more accessible across different markets.
We combine these capabilities with structured courses, practical projects, quizzes, progress tracking, and gamification to create an engaging learning environment.
Our goal is not to place a chatbot beside educational content. We are building an AI-native learning system where intelligence is embedded throughout the learner journey.
How We Built It
LearnWay AI was developed through our strategic pivot toward an AI-native learning experience, leveraging selected existing LearnWay infrastructure, technology and resources while building and deploying new Gemini-powered capabilities.
LearnWay AI is mobile-first, with production applications for Android and iOS built using Flutter. Our backend is built with NestJS and Node.js, with PostgreSQL for structured learner, course, progress, assessment, and application data.
Our production AI stack includes:
- Gemini-powered AI Tutor for contextual explanations and real-time learning assistance.
- Gemini-powered AI Mentor for personalized guidance, recommendations and learner support.
- AI Quiz Studio for generating educational quizzes and assessments.
- AI-powered assessment workflows for evaluating learner work and providing feedback.
- Gemini-assisted personalization using learner goals, learning activity, progress and educational context.
- Google Cloud Translation for multilingual content localization and accessibility.
Rather than treating Gemini as a standalone chatbot, we integrate AI directly into core learning workflows. The system can use relevant context such as a learner's goals, course activity, lesson content, assessment performance and progress to provide more useful and personalized interactions.
We also capture AI usage and operational data so we can monitor performance, understand how learners interact with our AI systems and continuously improve the experience.
Our biggest architectural objective was to move from a conventional digital learning platform toward an AI-native learning system where Gemini actively supports tutoring, mentorship, content generation, assessment, personalization and learner progression in production.
Challenges We Faced
One of our biggest challenges was moving from using AI as a feature to designing AI as part of the product's operating architecture.
Adding a chatbot is relatively straightforward. Building an AI system that understands what a learner is studying, considers their progress, provides useful guidance, evaluates their work, and recommends appropriate next actions requires significantly more context and orchestration.
Another challenge was accessibility. Many of the learners we want to serve rely primarily on smartphones, mobile data, lower-cost devices or inconsistent internet connectivity. We therefore had to balance sophisticated AI functionality with a simple and efficient user experience.
Localization presented another challenge. Educational material created for one market may not always be understandable or relevant in another. We incorporated multilingual and AI-assisted capabilities to make the learning experience more accessible across different contexts.
Finally, we had to determine where AI should make decisions and where human oversight remains valuable. Our objective is not to eliminate educators or mentors, but to use AI to make high-quality personalized support available at a scale that would otherwise be difficult and expensive to provide.
What We Learned
The biggest lesson from building LearnWay AI is that AI-native education is fundamentally different from adding AI to education.
AI becomes significantly more useful when it has appropriate context and participates throughout the learning journey.
We learned that tutoring, mentorship, assessment, feedback and learning recommendations do not have to operate as disconnected services. Gemini can help connect these experiences into a continuous learning loop:
Learn → Ask → Practice → Assess → Receive Feedback → Improve → Continue
We also learned that AI can reduce the cost of providing personalized educational support, which is particularly important in markets where access to individual tutors, mentors and career advisors is limited.
Most importantly, we learned that the value of AI is not measured by how many AI features a product contains. It is measured by whether those capabilities help users achieve better outcomes.
Our Vision
Our vision is to build the AI-native learning infrastructure for the next generation of learners in Africa and other emerging markets.
We believe the future of digital learning will move beyond static content libraries. Learning systems will increasingly understand each learner, respond to their needs, assess what they can actually do and continuously guide them toward meaningful skills and opportunities.
LearnWay AI is our step toward that future: making personalized learning, mentorship, practical assessment and career-relevant skills development accessible to anyone, regardless of geography or income.
