Inspiration

My inspiration for Learnova goes back to 7th grade. I remember seeing a child searching through garbage for something to eat. I was young enough that I didn't know what to call what I was seeing. I only knew that the child and I were standing in the same world and somehow living in completely different ones.

That moment stayed with me. It eventually led me to start teaching underprivileged students. Through teaching, I began seeing another side of the problem: students could be curious and genuinely want to learn, but they did not always have access to good learning resources or someone who could explain a concept whenever they were stuck.

That experience became the foundation for Learnova. I wanted to build something that could give students personalized academic support whenever they needed it, regardless of whether a teacher or tutor was immediately available.

What it does

Learnova is an AI-powered learning workspace designed to make studying more personalized and accessible.

Students can use it to ask questions and receive explanations through an AI tutor, work with PDFs and other study materials, generate summaries and flashcards, and organize their learning in one place.

Instead of being just another AI chatbot, I wanted Learnova to bring the different parts of studying together into one environment.

How we built it

I built Learnova from scratch using React, Vite, Tailwind CSS, Firebase, and an AI API.

I worked on the application's interface, navigation, authentication, dashboard, learning tools, and AI integration. I developed the project through multiple iterations, testing different layouts and features and continuously improving how the different parts connected with each other.

My goal was not simply to make the technology work, but to make the experience feel simple enough that a student could actually use it as part of their everyday studying.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was building the project from scratch while learning and solving problems along the way. I ran into bugs, integration issues, and features that did not behave as expected. Sometimes fixing one part of the application caused another part to stop working.

Another challenge was deciding which features genuinely belonged in Learnova. I had many ideas, but I had to keep asking whether a feature would actually help a student or just make the application more complicated.

Working under a limited amount of time also meant constantly making decisions about what to improve, what to simplify, and what to prioritize.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What I am most proud of is turning an idea connected to something I experienced years ago into a working product.

I am also proud that I built Learnova myself rather than stopping at the idea stage. I had to learn unfamiliar technologies, connect multiple services, solve bugs, and keep rebuilding parts of the project until they worked together.

Most importantly, Learnova represents the connection between my experience teaching students and my interest in technology. It is an attempt to use something I can build to address a problem I have personally witnessed.

What we learned

Building Learnova taught me that developing a meaningful project is much more than writing code.

I learned how to structure a real web application, integrate APIs and Firebase, design interfaces around actual users, and debug problems across different parts of a system.

I also learned that AI itself is not the solution. The important question is how AI can be used to solve a real problem. For Learnova, that meant thinking about what students actually struggle with and building around those needs rather than simply adding AI features because they were possible.

What's next for Learnova

The next step for Learnova is to make the learning experience more personalized and useful over time.

I want to continue improving the AI tutor, expand the ways students can turn their own materials into learning resources, and make the platform better at helping students organize and follow their learning journey.

Ultimately, I want Learnova to grow from a project I built into a tool that can genuinely help students who may not always have access to personalized academic support.
