LearnMate AI: Your Personal Multimodal Tutor

Inspiration

Students often struggle to understand complex concepts from textbooks, lecture videos, presentations, and diagrams. Traditional learning platforms may not fully consider individual learning needs. Students also find it difficult to identify weak topics and decide what to study next.

We were inspired to build LearnMate AI, a personalized learning companion that helps students understand concepts easily and learn at their own pace.

What it does

LearnMate AI transforms textbooks, PDFs, presentations, lecture videos, and diagrams into an interactive learning experience. It provides explanations grounded in uploaded study materials, with page, slide, and timestamp citations.

Key features include:

How we built it

We designed LearnMate AI using multimodal content processing, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), source-grounded AI responses, adaptive assessment, and learner modeling.

The system processes learning materials, retrieves relevant information, and generates explanations linked to their original sources. It also evaluates student answers, tracks topic-wise performance, and recommends suitable practice questions and revision activities.

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was ensuring that AI-generated answers remain grounded in uploaded study materials instead of providing unsupported information.

Other challenges included processing different content formats, extracting information from diagrams and videos, generating accurate questions and answer keys, preventing repeated questions, and adapting question difficulty to individual performance.

These challenges highlighted the importance of source verification, reliable assessment, and continuous evaluation.

We are proud of our approach to combining multimodal learning, source-grounded explanations, adaptive assessments, and student progress tracking in one personalized tutoring platform.

LearnMate AI aims to help students identify learning gaps, strengthen weak topics, and revise more effectively through an interactive and evidence-based learning experience.

What we learned

We explored multimodal AI, Retrieval-Augmented Generation, source attribution, adaptive assessment, and learner modeling.

We learned that an effective AI tutor must do more than generate answers. It should provide reliable evidence, evaluate student understanding, identify misconceptions, and adapt to learning progress. We also recognized the importance of evaluating AI accuracy and measuring the benefits of personalization.

What's next for LearnMate AI — Your Personal AI Tutor

We plan to improve multimodal content extraction, answer verification, and learner modeling. Future enhancements include interactive course maps, personalized study schedules, spaced-repetition revision, multilingual explanations, and advanced learning analytics.

We also aim to evaluate the platform using benchmark datasets, source-grounding metrics, and simulated learner profiles.

Our vision is to make learning smarter, more personalized, and accessible to every student, helping learners develop deeper understanding and become confident, independent learners.
