Inspiration
Every learner has different strengths, weaknesses, and learning needs. However, many learning platforms provide the same learning materials to everyone without identifying individual skill gaps. We wanted to build a platform that makes learning more personalized, interactive, and effective.
What it does
LearnIQ is an AI-powered personalized learning platform designed to analyze learning competencies, identify skill gaps, and recommend suitable learning activities. It helps learners understand their current knowledge through assessments and quizzes and guides them toward areas that need improvement.
The platform follows a learning workflow:
- Learning Material Upload: Users upload relevant learning or training materials.
- Content Analysis: AI analyzes the uploaded material and extracts important concepts and competencies.
- Quiz Generation: The platform generates questions to evaluate the learner's understanding.
- Assessment: Learners answer questions to evaluate their knowledge.
- Skill Gap Detection: The system identifies topics where the learner needs improvement.
- Personalized Learning: Based on assessment results, the platform recommends relevant learning materials and learning paths.
How we built it
We designed LearnIQ around a web-based architecture using React for the user interface and Python with FastAPI for backend services. Generative AI, natural language processing, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) can be used to analyze learning content, generate relevant questions, and provide context-based recommendations. A vector database can support semantic retrieval of relevant information from uploaded materials.
The platform connects content analysis, assessment, competency gap detection, and personalized recommendations into a single learning workflow.
Challenges we faced
One of the main challenges was designing a workflow that connects uploaded learning materials with meaningful assessments and personalized recommendations. Another challenge was ensuring that generated questions remain relevant to the source content and that recommendations address the learner's actual knowledge gaps.
We also considered how to present assessment results clearly so learners can understand their progress and identify what to study next.
What we learned
Through this project, we explored how AI can support personalized education, how frontend and backend services work together, and how NLP and RAG can be applied to learning materials. We also learned the importance of connecting assessment results with actionable recommendations rather than simply displaying scores.
What's next
Future improvements could include learner progress tracking, adaptive difficulty levels, multilingual learning support, detailed competency dashboards, and evidence-based explanations for AI-generated questions and recommendations.
Impact
LearnIQ aims to make learning more personalized and accessible by helping learners understand what they know, identify what they need to improve, and follow a more focused learning path.
