The Idea
As Corona shows us, even adults are having a hard time to organise their work from home without their usual daily structures - but we are expecting 13-year-olds to do it just like that?! They are bombarded with a flood of tasks, in unstructured E-Mail-feeds and various forums, quickly loosing the overview in the process - many of them do not even have a Computer at home!
This is why we are creating Learning Buddy - a mobile application for organising tasks and homework between teachers and their students. Teachers can create classes and submit tasks to their students. Students receive submitted tasks in their overview, and can easily track their progress. If they want, students can also add their own tasks, enabling an efficient task management. This ensures a healthy study environment in which the students can strive even during this crisis. We can also see the value of easier task organization of our app even when the crisis is over.
What we achieved during the Hackathon
Before the #EUvsVirus Hackathon, we only had an idea – now, we have a business plan and a first working prototype! We configured our server. We set up the server communication and backend. We designed lovely and child-oriented interfaces and colour schemes, and we made huge progress on our student and teacher interfaces! We can barely believe that we achieved this much with such a small team in just a weekend!
How we built it
The application frontend is built using Swift and the SwiftUI package. The backend is built using PHP and MySQL. The code is hosted on GitLab.
What's next for Learning Buddy
In the short term we will finish building the iOS app with all its intended features and port the app to Android.
In the long term, we envision to connect the major platforms already used for teacher-student communication to the Learning Buddy, so that teachers can easily integrate files shared in school forums. We are also thinking about introducing a class chatroom or forum, where students could communicate with the teachers and among themselves in a way they are already used to from WhatsApp, Telegram, or iMessage.
