Learning Journey - Revolutionizing Education with AI 🌐🚀

Inspiration 🌟

Learning Journey emerged from a recognition of challenges in traditional online education platforms. In a world OVERWHELMING with information and PAYWALLED courses, our vision was to create a platform that simplifies learning, breaking barriers of accessibility and financial constraints.

What it does 📚

Learning Journey is a groundbreaking platform leveraging generative AI to empower users in effortlessly creating detailed courses on their preferred topics. Users specify a main topic and subtopics, and our AI engine sources relevant YouTube videos, generates concise summaries, creates engaging quizzes, and introduces unique features like a PDF upload option. The inclusion of AI-generated mind maps sets us apart, offering a visual representation of personalised course content. Explore a public gallery of user-generated courses, fostering a collaborative learning community.

How we built it 🏗️

Our journey began with wanting to use our own custom educational oriented LLM. But due to time constraints, we ended up using OpenAI's GPT 3.5 turbo to develop the AI-driven engine for course curation. Amazon's EC2 and S3 databases were used to manage data seamlessly, TailwindCSS and SHADcn UI added elegance, a Python api script powered the backend, and AWS S3 facilitated scalable and secure storage. We then used PlanetScale and UnSplash to nicely display everything on our front end.

The Role of Docker 🐳

Docker played a crucial role, acting as the unsung hero in containerising our application and dependencies. It facilitated consistent development, testing, and deployment across environments, ensuring smooth operation of AI models and data integration processes.

Challenges we ran into 🤯

Creating Learning Journey presented challenges. As mentioned, we initially tried to train our own LLM but kept running into low available memory problems during the training, leading to a poorly trained model. We instead focused on using OpenAI's AI models, and successfully prompt engineering them for accurate video selection, summary generation, quiz creation, and mind map generation. Docker proved instrumental in overcoming challenges, providing a consistent development and deployment environment. Another problem we ran into was figuring out how to get consistently accurate AI generated mindmaps every single time, as they were written in markdown language. We constructed a prompt, and using OpenAI's Assistants, we were able to bypass this problem and get accurate mind maps, purely generated with AI, on any topic in the world!

Learning Journey has surpassed expectations, democratising learning and breaking down barriers to quality education. The growing library of user-generated courses, including PDF uploads and AI-generated mind maps, reflects the global impact and engagement of our community.

This journey revealed the tremendous potential of AI in education, emphasizing not only accessibility but also personalisation. Ongoing exploration focuses on making education engaging, interactive, and immersive.
