Inspiration
Notes apps store knowledge; they don't actually test it. Socrates, thousands of years ago, came up with the Socratic method - teaching through questioning.
What it does
User writes short notes (formulas, definitions, claims) tagged by type. A local, heuristic engine turns notes into a knowledge graph of concepts and links, using React Flow to display it. The graph surfaces gaps: undefined terms, isolated ideas, unconnected-but-related concepts, and connects concepts through an embedding model running semantic analysis all inside of your browser. An AI "Socrates" interrogates the user about each new note and its gaps, it never explains, only questions - just as Socrates intended. Split view: graph on the left, Socratic dialogue on the right.
How we built it
React + TypeScript + Tailwind, deployed via GitHub Actions to GitHub Pages. react-flow for an interactive, draggable knowledge graph. Client-side embeddings (transformers.js, MiniLM) in a Web Worker. Concept/gap extraction via local heuristics (keyword/pattern matching + embedding similarity), not an LLM call. Critically, all is done locally in the browser here. Your data and personal notes aren't getting sent off to 100+ third-parties Interrogation powered by Groq (BYOK), which uses the notes as RAG content for each question! Everything is preserved and persisted in IndexedDB
Challenges we ran into
Running a real embedding model fully in-browser without a backend. Yes, it downloads on entry and is super lightweight. You won't even notice it... Integrating the Groq BYOK into it directly, for crucial latency
Accomplishments that we're proud of
A fully local-first architecture: notes never leave the browser except the interrogation call itself. Interrogation that starts itself the moment you write something, in your chat window.
What we learned
Small, local models are viable for real product features, not just demos. AI is core to the design, but AI summarising notes is long gone. The question is how can it support your learning. Socrates gave us the answer thousands of years ago, LearnByInterrogation brings it to life!
Future advancements
Coworking with your friends on the same note space Adding user accounts while preserving the local and privacy emphasis Expanding to support Latex for maths notes
