Inspiration
I was helping a friend from France learn English. One day he showed his notes on his phone, and the vocabulary list he's building from words he collected while watching movies. I noticed that the last few words didn't have a translation and I asked why. He then described the process:
- He pauses the video when he sees/hears an unknown word
- He then writes the words on his list
- He searches for its meaning and goes back to the video
- Later at night, he copies all new words into Google Translate, and copies them back in his notes
I found the process quite exhausting, and started googling "how to highlight words subtitles", and couldn't find anything...
What it does
That gave the idea to create this chrome extension that allows users to click on unfamiliar words on subtitles to translate them as they watch, as well as add them to their vocabulary list in the chrome extension. They can also later export that list to use in their favorite language learning platforms.
I am proud of...
Within 2 days, I had an initial working version on my friend's machine. Him using it, combined with his feedback filled me with the energy to invest more time and bring this to other language learners.
What's next for Learn with subtitles
- Extend to other platforms: Right now it supports Youtube and Netflix videos.
- More export formats: Export formats compatible with language learning platforms
- Reaching out to the right audience and making it available for them
The long term plan is to systemize language learning through videos!
