Inspiration

During the COVID-19 pandemic, preventing misinformation is key to keeping people healthy and calm. As such, we were inspired to make trustworthy COVID-19 information easily accessible, in addition to making the learning process more enjoyable.

What it does

The website provides topical facts about COVID-19, verified by cited sources. Users can access different subsets of information quickly, and can engage in a quick mini-game to test their knowledge.

How we built it

Before starting the website or game, we had to research COVID-19 and compile information concisely. The website was then built from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and was published via Github Pages. We used various JavaScript libraries, including AOS and GSAP, which can animate elements. Furthermore, a Unity game was designed using original scripts and sprites, and was then exported to WebGL, which was embedded into the website.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, Unity prevented the download of the WebGL module and even after downloading the latest version of Unity (with the module), it prevented the creation of a new game and the version update of the current game. There was also the challenge of embedding the WebGL game into the website, since both files were designed to be independent websites. In addition, when doing formatting using CSS and JavaScript, we had to use a lot of trial and error to make the website look professional and clean. We also had to find JavaScript libraries that would allow for animation, then learn how to use them.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building and publishing a professional website in under 24 hours, as well as making a Unity game in that time period.

What we learned

We have to download necessary software prior to the hackathon. We also learned more extensive uses of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Unity, in addition to working with them under time pressure.

What's next for Learn COVID-19

As global knowledge of the SARS-CoV-2 virus grows, we'll try to maintain the continued accuracy of our website. Additionally, the mini-game will benefit from UI changes, sound, and more gameplay components.
