Inspiration

Our group has always been passionate about gaming; we have loved consuming the best products our entire lives, whether it be starcraft or half life 2. With this experience, we became aware that all gaming came with a large limitation in how a user can interact with the content. Currently, such mediums are restricted to keyboard/mouse and console controller. For this idea, we where inspired by Tom Cruise's Minority Report, where the star is able to interact with the holographic displays in many interesting and exciting ways. So we decided to combine these two ideas, and came up with a first person shooter where the user uses hand gestures instead of mouse/keyboard.

How it works

We used the leap motion and Unity.

Challenges I ran into

It was pretty hard having the leap motion recognize consistently the custom gestures and movements we wanted the user to be able to use in the game. Also, Synchronizing things with Unity was really really hard because we were unfamiliar with C Sharp and Unity has a real steep learning curve. This was our first time using Unity and it became quite clear that game development is meant to be a long, refined process.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud of the effort and dedication of my team. While the final product is always important and exciting, what I appreciate the most is how everyone, even though they where barely keeping their eyes open, was trying desperately to do as much as possible for the sake of the team. It was a process where everyone supported each other and it really brought us closer as friends.

What I learned

We need to plan out better what we want to do and segment work in a more efficient way so that there is not some overlapping components. Also, we learned a ton about Leap API, Unity 5, and generic game development.

What's next for Leap Shooter

Make the game better and more polished so that we can actually release it as an app and have other people enjoy it too :)
