Inspiration
The inspiration for LEAP - Learning Enhancement And Progression came from the need to bridge the gender gap in technical education and empower women in pursuing careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). Many women face barriers to accessing high-quality technical education, whether due to socio-economic factors, limited opportunities, or societal pressures. LEAP was designed to offer personalized learning paths for women, especially those interested in technical fields, to help them gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in tech careers. By leveraging AI, we can provide tailored educational journeys that meet the needs of women aspiring to enter or advance in technical studies.
What it does
LEAP is a web application that generates a personalized learning path for women and girls based on their educational background, skills, and goals, particularly in technical studies. The app uses AI to create customized learning paths that help users improve their technical knowledge and skills in fields such as programming, data science, engineering, and other STEM disciplines. This solution empowers women by providing easy access to resources, courses, and learning materials tailored to their interests and career aspirations in the tech industry.
How we built it
LEAP utilizes GroqCloud’s Llama model to process input from users, including their technical background, career goals, and educational history. This AI model helps generate personalized learning plans with specific resources such as online courses, books, and certifications. The front-end of the platform was built using Streamlit to create an intuitive user interface. To ensure security, we used Python’s python-dotenv to handle sensitive information such as API keys. By incorporating a range of technical studies and learning materials, LEAP helps guide women and girls through a tailored educational journey, specifically addressing the technical skills gap that often exists for women in the tech industry.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we encountered was curating accurate and relevant technical resources for women at various stages of their educational journey. As women interested in technical studies may come from different educational backgrounds, we had to ensure that the AI model could effectively suggest appropriate courses, tutorials, and certifications based on each user’s starting point. Additionally, creating an interface that is simple enough for all users, regardless of their tech knowledge, while still offering advanced resources, was a technical challenge we overcame with careful user experience design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a platform that not only provides personalized learning paths for women but also addresses the specific challenges women face in pursuing technical studies. By integrating AI-powered recommendations for technical courses, we can offer women a direct pathway to skills that are in high demand in the tech industry. We also ensured that the platform remains user-friendly, allowing even those with limited digital literacy to access and benefit from the technical educational resources we recommend.
What we learned
Throughout the development of LEAP, we learned that empowering women to pursue technical education requires more than just providing resources—it requires creating a system that understands and responds to the unique challenges women face in this field. From navigating biases in technical content to overcoming access barriers, we saw how technology can level the playing field, but also how important it is to ensure inclusivity and accessibility in technical education. We learned how AI can be used not just for technical studies, but to drive gender equality by removing the systemic barriers that often hold women back from entering technical fields.
What's next for LEAP - Learning Enhancement And Progression
In the future, we plan to enhance LEAP’s focus on technical education by expanding its database to include more specialized courses and certifications in emerging fields like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity. We also plan to collaborate with tech companies, educational institutions, and NGOs to offer mentorship and internship opportunities for women who complete learning paths in technical studies. Our goal is to ensure that LEAP becomes a launchpad for women to build successful careers in technology, fostering a more diverse and inclusive tech industry.
