Inspiration

The low level of digitisation in educational institutions was strongly illustrated by the COVID 19 pandemic.

Many existing systems for digitisation either concern individual areas of education or are available as individual tools.

We want to take a holistic approach and transfer lessons from familiar business processes and productivity tools to the education system. No matter whether these are state educational institutions, adult education centres or private further education opportunities.

Every teacher should have the independent opportunity to digitally design the daily educational process with his students.

What it does

The core of Leaon is to let the school go on online without to forget someone! Important for this are therefore a simple handling and the possibility to run the service not only on one PC or laptop to use, but also from your own smartphone. Leaon should Help teachers to keep in touch with their students. Leaon helps pupils while learning and communicating with teachers and their classmates. Parents should also be kept up to date with Leaon when it comes to school issues. Leaon unites the various parties on one platform – the virtual school is born!

Smooth transition to the digital classroom Teachers can create virtual workspaces and create documents in Leaon. Due to a smooth transition from non-digitised education to high-digitised education, everyone is able to upload existing files or work through attachments or camera images.

Hybrid Web-App and mobile Apps Leaon is built with modern web-technologies to fulfil the needs of e-Learning, but also tackle the problems we encountered in the first part of this concept. This hybrid web-app can run in web browsers on every display-size due to strict responsive design. In addition, due to the technical stack, Leon will be also available as a mobile App for iOS or Android, which is based on the same code and user-interface like the web-application.

Offline-First In our research and talks to different teachers and parents, we saw, that the network infrastructure is in some parts of Europe a huge issue to participate on e-Learning. Even in schools there are a lot of differences of network quality and the equipment.

In the cloud or on-premise - you decide! Leaon is built on a modern technical infrastructure, to be scalable, giving a high availability and has the cloud in focus. The complete infrastructure is based on “dockerized” microservices, which can be simply deployed in a variety of infrastructures.

Inclusion and accessibility Due to the digital possibilities, Leaon will provide several tools for better inclusion and accessibility for all people and disabilities. For example, all digital Documents, which will be available in Leaon, can use several display-modes for people with visual impairment (e.g. larger font-sizes or more contrast), but also different fonts for a better readability for people with dyslexia.

How we built it

Backend: MongoDB, .NET Core Web API Frontend: Hybrid Web-App including Mobile App for iOS and Android Everything is available as Docker-Images.

Leaon is built with the key-features in mind. The current protoype is available online (see below) and already uses the techniques for Hybrid-Apps, Offline-First and was already built with CI/CD to get it started right.

Challenges we ran into

The fully hybrid-app is of course a challenge. While developing the tools, you have all platforms in mind and tackle their individual issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The collaboration between team-mates, the very fast developing due to preparation and the choose of the right frameworks.

What we learned

In order to bring Leaon to live, we need expertise in sales and more ressources in development and marketing.

What's next for Leaon - Learn Online

We work on our plan to be able to start Leaon for individual teachers in two to three months, while contacting schools in the region to participate as "pilot-schools".
