About the project:
Leak Alert was inspired by the urgent need to address Africa’s worsening water crisis. Witnessing water wastage through leaking infrastructure motivated me to build a practical, technology-driven solution to conserve water and improve municipal responses.
What I learned:
Through this project, I gained deep insights into AI-powered computer vision, cloud data management, and citizen engagement strategies. I learned how to integrate real-time detection with user-friendly reporting tools and scalable dashboards.
How I built it:
I developed Leak Alert using Azure Custom Vision for AI leak detection, integrated with an ASP.NET MVC web app and Azure SQL for data storage. The platform allows citizens to report leaks via a mobile interface, which AI then verifies before alerting municipal authorities through an interactive dashboard.
Challenges faced:
Major challenges included gathering diverse and high-quality image datasets, minimizing false positives in AI detection, and ensuring the system was user-friendly for citizens and efficient for municipalities. Balancing accuracy with performance required iterative training and testing.
