LEAK is a platform built for users to share and view information about local environmental and sustainability challenges.

Inspiration

Inspired by the NYC Citizen app, which is focused on local safety, LEAK is meant to address the same opportunity but for environmental concerns.

What it does

LEAK allows users to post and view environmental hazards they experience, ensuring others to take action to either avoid or remediate the issue.

How we built it

LEAK is built entirely with WIX on both the front- and back-ends. It features a custom UI design and a relational WIX collection (database) from Velo by Wix.

Challenges we ran into

Our two biggest technical challenges were determining how to connect a back-end to a WIX UI (which we initially attempted with MongoDB before moving to the WIX-exclusive solution) and incorporating the more advantaged user input features such as the address/map. We also had a logistical challenge that only one person could edit a WIX site at one time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

None of our team members had ever used WIX before, and we now have a fully-functioning platform meeting our original goals for the project.

What we learned

  • how to leverage WIX to spin up a user interface
  • how to customize WIX UIs with custom JavaScript
  • how to connect WIX to a back-end database with full CRUD functionality

What's next for LEAK

Our next steps are to incorporate even more advanced inputs, such as pictures, and to enable sorting and filtering of previous posts to ensure users can focus on the information most relevant to them.
